How to clean sound absorbers with a felt surface properly?
The areas of application for felt are very diverse. In addition to industry, the component is used by the clothing and heating sectors due to its special features. Above all, the robust material is popular in the field of acoustics. Whether in living areas, home cinemas or music rooms - felt improves room acoustics.
Properties of felt
For acoustics, the numerous positive properties of felt are utilised to produce high-quality and highly effective sound absorbers. The following aspects are particularly important when working with felt:
Insulation capability: Due to this property, felt is an integral part of heat and sound insulation. Acoustic felt both absorbs and dampens sound.
Durability: Felt surfaces make sound absorbers robust and very durable.
Acoustic felt is water-resistant by nature. This makes for easy-care and insensitive sound absorbers.
Soft and warm is the ideal property for the living area. Sound absorbers with acoustic felt fit perfectly into the design of the rooms and have a cosy effect.

Care and cleaning of felt
Sometimes creases form on the acoustic felt during transport or storage of the absorbers. No need to worry! This is completely normal and is due to temperature fluctuations and/or relatively high humidity. The creases can easily be smoothed out again with a standard household iron.
Proceed as follows:
Ironing instructions for acoustic felt
Set the iron to the lowest temperature setting. Switch off the steam nozzle of the iron. Run the iron over the felt surface of the absorber in even movements for about two minutes.
Cleaning felt surfaces
Generally speaking, the acoustic felt of an absorber is not sensitive to dirt, but of course it can occasionally become soiled, although this can usually be easily removed. When cleaning, it is important to avoid strong friction and to carry out the movements evenly in one direction so as not to damage the fibre structure of the surface. We recommend using a soft clothes brush, a duster or a soft cloth:
Run the clothes brush over the dirt in small, quick movements. Work gently and only with light pressure. It is best to run the brush in one direction only so that the fibres of the felt backing retain their uniform appearance.
When cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, only a hoover attachment without a brush should be used. Light and gentle pressure is completely sufficient.
In case of soiling, treatment with a soft and dry cloth is possible. To preserve the fibre structure of the felt surface, quick, gentle and uniform movements in one direction are recommended.

Sustainability with acoustic felt
Felt is a very sustainable material thanks to its durability. Behind its long service life lies minimal maintenance, a robust and resistant surface and the low consumption of energy and resources. Felt is also ideal for saving energy, as it has an insulating effect and is therefore both financially and ecologically beneficial.
